NAVIGATING THE "NEW NORMAL": ORALMED LABORATORIES ONE YEAR LATER

"Resilience and adaptation: Our journey through unprecedented times"

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped our world in ways we never imagined. From the arts to education, from economics to athletics, and most critically, in healthcare, we've witnessed a seismic shift in our daily lives. This global crisis has pushed us to confront scenarios that, not long ago, seemed confined to the realms of science fiction.

The field of Dental Medicine found itself at the epicenter of this transformation. COVID-19 didn't just disrupt patient consultations; it sent shockwaves through the entire industry, including the intricate process of dental prosthesis production in laboratories.

To gain insight into this evolving landscape, we sat down with Raúl Fernandes, the visionary Director of OralMED Laboratories. Our conversation explored the pandemic's profound impact on the critical work of laboratory teams and how they've adapted in the year since everything changed.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped operations at OralMED Laboratories?

Fernandes doesn't mince words: "This crisis has been a crucible for innovation and resilience. It's challenged us on both personal and professional fronts, demanding a fundamental shift in our approach to daily life. We've had to cultivate a heightened sense of responsibility, tolerance, and understanding, all while maintaining constant vigilance. If there's a silver lining, it's that this era has underscored the vital importance of considering the welfare of others in everything we do."

While the laboratories were fortunate to have relatively few positive COVID-19 cases, the ripple effects were still significant. "We faced reductions in our workforce due to preventative isolations and family care needs," Fernandes explains. "This inevitably impacted our response capabilities."

The pandemic's global reach created a domino effect of business challenges: "We've grappled with reduced production, resource scarcity, logistical hurdles, and extended delivery times for essential materials," Fernandes notes. "These obstacles catalyzed the adoption of new systems and strategies, such as implementing far-sighted inventory management and diversifying our product and supplier base."

What innovative measures did OralMED take to overcome these unprecedented challenges?

Fernandes is quick to emphasize the paramount importance of safety: "Our first and foremost priority was safeguarding our teams. We implemented robust protective measures to ensure a secure working environment."

Adaptability became the watchword for OralMED's approach. "We undertook a comprehensive internal restructuring to enhance our responsiveness," Fernandes reveals. "Long-term planning gave way to agile, day-to-day problem-solving. We learned to tackle familiar challenges in novel ways, embracing flexibility as our new norm."

Fernandes highlights an unexpected source of strength: "Perhaps our most significant asset was one we didn't consciously cultivate – the innate human capacity for adaptation. This wasn't limited to our laboratory teams; it was a societal shift. This collective resilience has been crucial in navigating the ongoing challenges we face."

Looking back over the past months, how would you assess OralMED's journey through this crisis?

Fernandes strikes a note of cautious optimism: "While I'm heartened by our progress, I'm acutely aware that we're still on a journey. There's considerable work ahead as we continue to navigate this evolving landscape."

Despite the challenges, the future looks promising for OralMED. "Our key performance indicators are encouraging, fueling our enthusiasm for what lies ahead," Fernandes shares. "The OralMED Saúde Group continues its impressive growth trajectory, now boasting 61 proprietary clinics. This expansion necessitates parallel growth in our laboratory capabilities to meet the escalating needs of our clinics and the thousands of patients we serve. Our mission is clear: sustain our growth while steadfastly maintaining the superior quality of our services."
